May 20-23, 2013

We have a short week this week -- enjoy the long upcoming weekend!

Ancient Medieval
Mon. 5/20 -- Church reform and Crusades vocab quiz: Simony, Indulgences, St. Francis, Inquisition, Gothic, Flying Buttresses, Crusade, Holy Land, Richard the Lion-hearted, Saladin, Urban II, Siege of Acre. Notes on the evolving government of England and reading of the Magna Carta -- we will look for rights protected in the Magna Carta that are still current.
Tue. 5/21 -- Team project on the 12th Century Renaissance p. 387-392 in the book.  Groups will develop a visual for their project and write 50 facts about the Middle Ages from the text and supplemental readings in the classroom. 
Wed. 5/22 -- Finish the project and discuss changes in the Middle Ages
Thur. 5/23 -- Disasters of the 14th century :  Avignon papacy, Great Schism and the Black Death -- Notes and a video :)

Geography
Mon. 5/20 -- Introduce SE Asia and Oceania (look at the map in the book p. 674-687).  Complete the map of SE Asia.  Review if possible at the end of class.
Tue. 5/21 -- One day project on the history and culture of SE Asia.  We will also look at a few travel locations.  There will be a sub today, so if students are absent they will complete an alternate assignment from the text book -- see Ms. Fenton on Wednesday.
Wed. 5/22 -- PP on SE Asia and quick review -- QZ . on SE Asia.  Goodday May vocab activity and the map of Australia.  We should get done today, but may extend a little over onto the 23rd.
Thur. 5/23 -- Video: Australia Revealed. 

Art History
The class will spend the four days this week finishing their final project (which counts as a test grade).  The project is to design a museum exhibit with a theme and art chosen from the entire selection of course work.  The museum layout and art will be due on Thursday when students will present their work.
Mon. -- Library (finish writing if possible, complete the exhibit introduction)
Tue. -- Library again (last day to work in the library, I will have tagboard to begin the museum layouts).
Wed. -- In class, finish the layout of the museum and double check all work.  Place thumbnail versions of art on the plan. 
Thur. -- Presentations and Fete Gallante!

Ancient Medieval
Mon. 5/13 -- Finish pilgrimage map of Europe.   Notes on the Age of Faith in Europe (pilgrimages, issues with church, relics and cathedrals).  Cathedral assignment (may finish as homework -- due Tuesday 5/14 -- 15 points -- turn in).
Tue. 5/14 -- Calendar for final unit will be handed out -- review deadlines for seniors and juniors.
Crusades introduction -- there is a lecture with primary source reading moments to complete today. 
Wed. 5/15 -- Kingdom of Heaven movie on the capture of Jerusalem by Saladin
Thur. 5/16 -- Finish movie.
Fri. 5/17 -- Finalize the graphic organizer on the Crusades and complete the assignment on the Reconquista.  All students in drama make sure to get these assignments before you leave on the festival.

Mon. 5/13 -- Korea -- reading in text and worksheet on the two Koreas p. 647-650.  Video on North Korea "Inside North Korea" -- review for the quiz on Tuesday
Tue. 5/14 -- Quiz on East Asia map.  Divide into groups of four and complete the timeline of Japanese history  -- handouts are used to complete this assignment.  If you are absent see Ms. Fenton for a handout and directions.
Wed. 5/15 -- Read about modern Japan p. 651-655 complete a note web.  Video: Living Treasurers of Japan.  We will watch segments of the video and discuss the idea of a living treasure.

Art History
Mon. 5/13 -- Review for the Modern Art Test (review sheet today and a quiz style review).  AC: 89-98 are Due on art since 1945.  The LAST set of art cards.
Tue. 5/14 -- Review slides for the test ; Power points must be e-mailed by 3 p.m. to be on-time.
Wed. 5/15 -- Test over modern art -- There are two essay questions.  NOTEBOOK #5 DUE -- the Last notebook :)
Thur. 5/16 --   Separate short essay with the powerpoint (typed) is also DUE today. Day one for the Museum project which will count as the final for the class. I will review the project guide and allow groups to start searching for a theme and art.  We couldn't get into the library, so if you have your own laptop you might want to bring it :)

Mon. 5/6 -- Mini-lecture on Lay Investiture (get notes). Close reading and updating the language of letters from Henry IV and Gregory VII.
Tue. 5/7 -- QZ: Feudalism vocabulary. Intro lecture on Japan, there is a note sheet with a map to complete on Japan. 
Wed. 5/8 -- Video: Japan Empire Series -- this video is about the rise of Tokugawa and the founding of the Tokugawa shogunate.  Comparing Charlemagne and Tokugawa will be the "essay" for the test on Friday.  If you are gone borrow VERY good notes! NOTEBOOK #5 is due.

Geography
Mon. 5/6 -- Graphic Organizer on the Religions of South Asia (Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism). This will be very similar to the assignment we did comparing the religions of the SW Asia.  We will again use graphic keys to sort and organize the information.
Tue. 5/7 -- Read paged 578-579 about Cyclones in South Asia.  Lecture on the Issues of South Asia (population, weather and corruption).  GLOBAL ISSUES paper due -- Your note packet is due with your paper.
Wed. 5/8 -- Read intro p. 606-607 of East Asia. Complete the map of East Asia. 
Thur. 5/9 -- China Worksheet, video clip on Tianamen Square.  Three Gorges dam, p. 628-630.

Ancient Medieval
Mon. 4/29 -- Video on the Early Middle Ages, monasteries and Charlemagne,  Some lecture notes on Charlemagne HW: Read p. 353-355 to prep for the quiz.
Tue. 4/30 -- Qz. on the Germanic Tribes. Video on the Vikings and drawing a Viking longship.
Wed. 5/1 -- Viking readings -- group projects about the Vikings. Each group will have a different topic about the Vikings to explore.  A drawing and 8 interesting facts. IF Absent -- Choose one of these topics (Viking Runes, Viking (norse) Mythology, Viking forts, Viking exploration (Iceland, Greenland) and do some research.  Write (in your own words) about 125 words on the topic and return to me. 
Thur. 5/2 -- Introduction to Feudalsim. Reading p. 360-363.  A quick simulation on feudal structure. Students will spend about half of the period reading about Feudalism and drawing a diagram of a feudal manor. p. 360-363.  Diagram all 8 parts of the manor and write 6-8 sentences about life on a manor.
Fri. 5/3 -- Lecture on Castles and Knights. Reading about the technology of seiges.  We will read about different seige engines and defensive structures used in the middle ages.

World Geography
Mon 4/29 -- Video "Gandhi" for two days will we view the movie "Gandhi" to look at questions of independence in India and how the partition (based on religion) affects South Asia today.  Students will identify several forms of civil disobediance used in the Indian independence movement.
Tue. 4/30 -- See above
Wed. 5/1 -- Global Issues paper, 3rd work day and 2nd day in the library. An outline of the paper is due by the end of the period.
Thur. 5/2 -- Final class time for the Global Issues paper.  We will take about 10 minutes in class to look at creating a Works Cited page and citing quotes properly in a paper.  Students will also recieve directions.
Fri. 5/3 -- Powerpoint pictures/review of South Asia.  Quiz on South Asia geography. Worksheet on the history of India. p. 567-572.
Tuesday 5/7 -- Global Issues Paper due by 3 p.m.

Art History
Mon. 4/29 -- Art Cards 77-87 are DUE -- Early Modern art and 2 buildings.  Library time to work on art team research questions.
Tue. 4/30 -- Art team research, second day in the library (questions due at the end of the period).
Wed. 5/1 -- Modern Art Review day -- I have three types of cards to play review games with.  You will switch between types of cards.  We are preparing for a quiz where types of modern art are shown and students correctly identify the style.
Thur. 5/2 -- Quiz on Art styles,  Discussion of the AP Art History Free-Response Questions, format and scoring guides.

Ancient Medieval
Mon. 4/15 -- We will finish the map of Constantinople taking notes on Justinian, the Hagia Sophia, and the city itself.  Also students will take notes on a brief lecture on Byzantine history. 
Tue. 4/16 -- Lageacies of Byzantium -- Today student teams will begin the look at legacies of Byzantinum (law, engineering, art, Eastern Orthodoxy, Cyrillic).  Each group will prepare and poster and presentation for class.
Wed. 4/17 -- Finalize presentations.  We will also complete the presentations today in class.
Thur.. 4/18 -- Qz. on Byzantium.  Russian Empire reading guide, p. 307/311.  We will also read an exerpt from the Primary Chronicle, a primary source on Russian history.
Fri. 4/19 -- Powerpoint notes on Russian history.  DVD Engineering an empire on the Cathedral of the Assumption and St. Basils.  Notes from DVD will be added to lecture notes.

Wed. 4/10 -- Finish map as needed.  Reading about the Dome of the Roc, p. 266.  Islamic Art Show and discussion of trends in art -- How does Islamic art reflect the culture of Islam?
Thur. 4/11 -- Partner activity on the Contributions of Islam.  Read page 273-279.  Choose 8 legacies of Islamic culture and describe with at lteas two sentences each.  One must include the House of Wisdom.  Look at Astronomy, math, literature, art, science, architecture .....
Fri. 4/12 -- Map of Constantinople (get a copy from the file if you are gone). We will work on the map for about 30 minutes and then switch over to Engineering an Empire to write notes on the Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia and the Nika Riots.

Tue. 4/9 -- African tribe project.  Each student will get a different African tribe to read about.  The project uses a set of books from the HHS library.  Students will read about the tribe, summarize some customs, and draw a house to put the the environment map.   If you are absent you may try to use the internet (but it is easier to check out a book from the library) and complete the assignment.
