Welcome to Second Semester

Ancient Medieval
Wed. 1/22 -- Hand out and review class policies and syllabus.  Take these home and let your parents review them.  The half piece of paper attached (purple) should be signed and returned.  Class activity about the characteristics of civilization.  You will have to make a copy from a friend if you are absent. Label and place in notebook. A 1-inch notebook is required for class.
Thur. 1/23 -- Introduction to the time periods of Greece.  Complete a map of Greece and a timeline of Greek history.  Due on Friday.
Fri. 1/24 -- Lecture/discussion on the Minoans.  We will look at pictures from Crete and try to learn about the Minoans. Historians have not been able to translate linear A, so much of our understanding of the Minoans is from other sources and archaeology.  Complete notes/worksheet.

Economics
Wed. 1/22 -- Hand out and review class policies and syllabus. Take these home and let your parents review them. The half piece of paper attached (green) should be signed and returned.  Begin good and services project and collect your interview data.  Remember to interview 5 teens tonight about their buying habits.
Thur. 1/23 -- Get together in groups and compile your data.  Look at your hypothesis and write a conclusion, explanation and prediction.  Class discussion about data and writing.  Letter of introduction. 
Fri. 1/24 -- Books will be handed out today.  Vocabulary project for chapter 1.  Student teams (some solo in period 5) will work on vocabulary words from chapter 1.  They will make a simple poster and present these words to the class.  Vocab quiz coming on Wednesday 1/29.

Welcome to Finals Week!

World Geography
Mon. 1/13 -- Review picture PowerPoint.  With the pictures we will make a list of the places we have studied, countries and regions.  Students will also complete the physical world review list and make a world physical map.{Rivers: Danube, Volga, Congo, Nile, Ganges, Chang Jiang Amazon.  bodies of Water: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, Mediterranean, Black Sea, Arabian sea, Caribbean Sea, Lake Baikal, Lake Victoria; Mountains: Alps, Himalayan, Andes; Deserts: Sahara, Andes; Islands: British Isles, West Indies, Java, and Places: Equator, Prime Meridian, Arabian Peninsula.C
Tue. 1/14 -- Review picture PowerPoint.  Cities review from the purple list I handed out.  We will match cities to countries and then play Bingo.
Wed. 1/15 -- Review picture PowerPoint.  Countries review from the purple list.  We will team up and review as many maps as possible in the class period.
Fri. 1/17 -- World Geography 4th period final is on Friday.  The final counts as 10% of the semester grade.  Study! Some nice websites are www.ilike2learn.com and www.freerice.com  both have geography quizzes.

Mon. 1/13 -- Test review for the High Middle Ages test.  The test is material on Chapter 14.  We will do a quick comparison between the 12th Century Renaissance and the problems of the 14th century.
Tue. 1/14 -- Test on the High Middle Ages.  The essay is on the social changes of the 12th century from banks to universities.
Wed. 1/15 -- Final Review day -- Review game and test strategy discussion.
Thur. 1/16 -- Finals for periods 1,3,5 so that is 1st period!
Fri. 1/17 -- Finals for periods 2,4,6, so that is 6th period. 

Economics
Mon. 1/13 -- On Friday students read articles from National Geographic about resource issues ranging from human and animals (land) to energy and water. Students will be grouped by topic and will prepare and give presentations using the information from their reading.
Tue. 1/14 -- Watch "When children do the Work."  Discussion on the negatives of globalization.  Student partners will then create T-Charts showing the positives and negatives on global trade.  Use pages 501-518 if you are at home to complete.
Wed. 1/15 -- Test Review day
Thur. 1/16 -- Finals for periods 1,3,5 so that is 3rd period!
Fri. 1/17 -- Finals for periods 2,4,6, so that is 2nd period. See you early in the morning.

World Geography
Mon. 1/6 -- Today we begin Australia! We start with a Australian vocab challenge (yes mate!) and then do the map of Australia and New Zealand. 
Tue. 1/7 -- Video "Australia revealed" with worksheet. 
Wed. 1/8 -- PowerPoint to review both Australia and New Zealand.  Introduce South Pacific regions -- notes using a graphic organizer.  Read pages 698-701 on human environment interaction. 
Thur. 1/9 -- Short video clip on islands and rising sea levels in the South Pacific.  Review for the last test on SE Asia and Oceania.
Fri. 1/10 -- Test on SE Asia and Oceania.  Discussion of the final.
NOTE the World Geography final will be on Friday 1/17.  It counts for 10% of the semester grade.

Mon. 1/6 -- Notes on the growth and government of England. Reading of the Magna Carta -- Discuss CBA paper assignment. HW: Reading pages 387-392 with worksheet.
Tue. 1/7 -- What changes are happening in Europe in the 12th century?  Discuss reading assignment.  What is social history?  We will begin a two day social history project where students will work in groups looking at the developments in Europe during the 12th-13th centuries (banking, agriculture, learning, growing cities and a middle class). Students will work in groups of 3 or 4 students.  
Wed. 1/8 -- Finish social history project.
Thur. 1/9 -- Disasters of the 14th century -- the church and the 100 years war.  Short video on Joan of Arc.
Fri. 1/10 -- Notes on the Black Death and video.  Yes another disaster of the 14th century.  Notebook #6 DUE.
Mon. 1/13 -- Test on the High Middle Ages:  The essay will focus on the 12th-13th century and social/economic changes of that time.

Economics
Mon. 1/6 -- Review ideas on trade -- Worksheet on Economic Development. 
Tue. 1/7 -- QZ: (open note) on trade, history and development.  You will need notes on comparative/absolute advantage. trade history and worksheet on economic development. What is Globalization?  Create a definition.  Read pages 501-507 do questions 2-6 on page 507.
Wed. 1/8 --DVD "People's Republic of Capitalism"  Create a web showing trade connections between China and the United States.
Thur. 1/9 -- International Trade groups (notes on the EU and NAFTA). News reading on US and trade negotiations in the future.
Fri. 1/10 -- Library to read about resource issues from National Geographic. This reading will be turned into a presentation to the class on Monday.

World Geography
Mon. 12/16 -- Review for the Asia test.  We will finish the review sheet and go over the three short answer questions. (Gandhi and non-violent disobedience; China and population; Cultural forces in Japan -- tradition and change).
Tue. 12/17 -- Test on Asia -- start the map of SE Asia
Wed. 12/18 - Finish map of SE Asia. Map is DUE today.  Introduction pages 674-687.
Thur. 12/19 -- PowerPoint on SE Asia (pictures and map review). SE Asia project with partners. Get directions from me if you are absent. 
Fri. 12/20 -- Qz SE Asia map.  Finish the project on SE Asia.

Mon. 12/16 -- Introduction to the Crusades -- reading primary sources and PowerPoint.  There is a sheet for notes to complete and stamp.
Tue. 12/17 -- Movie: Kingdom of Heaven * There is an alternative assignment.
Wed. 12/18  -- Movie:  Kingdom of Heaven

Thur. 12/19 -- Graphic organizer on the crusades (on purple paper) review for the quiz and QZ on the Age of Faith and the Crusades (fill in the blank vocab). Autobiography of Medieval Person is DUE by 3 p.m. today.  It is worth 150 points.

Fri. 12/20 -- Mini project on Cathedrals. 

Economics
Mon 12/16 -- Reading about the "Budget Deal" going through Congress.  We will read an article about the recent House vote and then look at a CNN article on the deal in plain English.  Table groups will make a chart where sides compromised to reach a deal.
Tue. 12/17 -- Read the introduction to trade p. 441-443.  Lecture notes on International trade -- comparative advantage and absolute advantage.  If absent get notes and read pages 441-445.
Wed. 12/18 -- Brief introduction on trade barriers (tariffs and quotas). Students will make a T-chart showing arguments for protectionism and free trade.  There are five points of comparison: national defense, infant industries, balance of payments, keeping jobs and home and keeping the money at home p. 448-452. Fore each describe the protection argument and free trade argument.  Include a graphic. (you will probably want to see the sample before you start1)
Thur. 12/19 -- Trade history lecture and the WTO -- Mini-project on issues with the WTO. 
Fri. 12/20 -- Finish presentations on the WTO as necessary.  Federal Reserve Centennial.

World Geography
Mon. 12/9 -- Finish maps on East Asia.  Video on China from Discovery Atlas.  Questions go with the video, so if you are absent get a copy of the questions to copy like notes.
Tue. 12/10 -- Worksheet on China (p. 635-639). We will look at a population pyramid and see how China's population control policies are reshaping the country.  Also the policy just changed -- what is the new policy? Reading together about the Three Gorges Dam. p. 628-630. 
Wed. 12/11 -- Korea worksheet -- this is quite short and just compares North and South Korea.  We will watch "Inside North Korea" which is a really fascinating look at the country's isolation from the rest of the world.
Thur.  12/12 -- PowerPoint on East Asia (quiz review) QZ on the East Asia map.  Video "Living Treasurers of Japan
Fri. 12/13 --  Web notes on Japan (p. 651-655).  Make a web of notes about Japan -- History 5 bullets, Economy 5 bullets, Culture 4 bullets and life today  4 bullets.  Discuss Japan and tradition and change. Finish 5 minutes of Gandhi (from substitute) and hand out review sheet.

Mon. 12/9 -- Test on Early Middle Ages and Japan.  Essay has a comparison chart between Charlemagne and Ieyasu Tokugawa. There will be about 20 minutes for review on Monday. Notebook #5 DUE. 
Tue. 12/10 -- Day one in the library for Autobiography on a famous medieval person.  We will have two library days.  The paper will be due Wednesday before vacation.

Wed. 12/11 -- Cartoon vocabulary on the five types of unemployment.  Notes on how unemployment is figured and why it is always understated.  Culminating Portfolios due (you may not have all of your best works at this time).

Dear parents --I will be gone from Wednesday 12/4 though the end of the week. 

World Geography
Mon. 12/2 -- Graphic organizer on religions of India (Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism).  Students will do a graphic organizer (complete with symbols)showing the basic beliefs of the religion, date and place it was founded, founder, name of religious building, holy book and symbol.  We did a similar assignment for the world religions founded in the Middle East.
Tue. 12/3 -- Lecture about issues in south Asia (population, monsoons and unstable governments).  Discussion of Indian history in preparation for movie "Gandhi" Students missing class will need to make up notes and turn them in.
Wed. 12/4 -- Movie "Gandhi"
Thur 12/5 -- Movie "Gandhi"  Students missing the video will need to look up non-violent methods used by Gandhi to gain India's independence.  Turn in notes describing the Salt March, Cloth Boycott, and Gandhi's fast during the division of India and Pakistan.
Fri. 12/6 -- Introduce East Asia, Map of East Asia due today.

Mon. 12/2 -- Notes on Christendom and lay investiture.  Students will translate letter written between Henry and Gregory into more modern language.
Tue. 12/3 -- Notes on the history of Japan -- these include a small map of Japan and continue through the rise of Odo Nobunaga.
Wed. 12/4 -- Library to work on a "Japan letter" Students need a copy of the directions but briefly they will pick a very specific topic about Japan, do some research and write a letter to me about what they learned and why they picked the topic. They need to use two sources and make an informal works cited page. Typically I get a huge range of letters -- noh theater and kabuki, to kimonos, to katana blades.  Sometimes students do specific battles.
Thur. 12/5 -- Video on Japan.  Write 12 facts about the life and rise to power or Ieyasu Tokugawa.
Fri. 12/6 -- Review sheet on European Middle Ages and Japan.
TEST on Monday -- if you are gone for Levenworth - get the review sheet - your test will still be on Monday.

Economics
Mon. 12/2 -- Computer lab to work on Corporation Project or Culminating Portfolio.
Tue. 12/3 -- Repeat Monday
Wed. 12/4 -- Library to do research on different countries and their standard of living.  Students will get a "Where would you like to live" assignment with a country already listed.  They will complete the research and analysis.
Thur. 12/5 -- Students will learn about the four different types of inflation and how inflation is measured.  Begin class with notes on inflation.  Students will make skits about various topics related to inflation.  Skits will be performed in class.
Economic Current Event #2 DUE -- about 75 word summary, 125 word analysis (use vocab words) and the citation.
Fri. 12/6 -- Read pages 353-359 -- Business Cycles an Fluctuations.  Draw a business cycle labeling the peak, trough, recession and expansion. Answer questions 2,3,4 and 5.

Mon. 11/25 -- Worksheet on the landscape of South Asia. p. 551-555, Reading pages 560-560.  DVD India Revealed.  The DVD has questions to complete.

Tue. 11/26 -- PowerPoint on South Asia (map quiz review) Worksheet on the history of India p. 567-572.  Review for the map quiz tomorrow.
Global Issues Paper Due by 3:30 p.m.  Any e-mails must be followed by a printed paper.  I will not print papers (use the library or Career Center). It is worth about 200 points.
Wed. 11/27 -- Quiz over South Asia.  Finish India Revealed DVD.

Mon. 11/25 -- Finish Viking projects and do presentations.  Introduce Feudalism.  Students will read pages 360-363.  Write definitions for all blue words,  diagram a European feudal pyramid. Use bullets to describe what life is like in a manor (about 8 bullets).
Tue. 11/26 -- Lecture on Castles and Knights. Reading about siege technology.  Quiz Review day.
Wed. 11/27 -- Qz. on Feudalism and knights.  Short PowerPoint and worksheet on Illuminated manuscripts.

Economics
Mon. 11/25 -- Finish GDP maps.  Introduce Keynes and the output-expenditure model.  Diagram of the components of GDP.  Video clip on Keynes.
Tue. 11/26 -- Library -- Internet quest on GDP and CPI (consumer price index). We might need to catch up a little on Keynes before we go.
Wed. 11/27 -- Open-note quiz on Keynes.
