Geography
Mon. 1/2 --Reviw LA maps.  Readpages 201-205 and take notes on a power point on Latin American landscaptes.  The notes are turned in for credit.  We will do the map activity on p. 206 together.
Tue. 1/3 -- First day in the library to work on the Latin American resources map.  Each student will draw a country in LA and complete the map with topography and resources.  (2 days)
Wed. 1/4 -- See Tuesday, 2nd day.
Thur. 1/5 -- Video of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.  Worksheet with video. Get a sheet from a classmate and copy the answers.

Mon. 1/2 -- Introduction to trade. Read p. 441-443.  Lecture notes on trade and comparative and absolute advantage.  (notes used on upcoming quiz).  Read 446.
Tue. 1/3 -- Read p. 448-452.  Make a chart comparing the "Free trade" and "protectionist" arguement for the different ideas about trade (infant industries, etc.).  The title in the book is arguments for protection, but in the reading the "free trade" argument is at the end of each section.  Include all 6 arguments for protection in your chart.  Define tariff and quota.
Wed. 1/4 -- Mini-lecture on trade history and the WTO (use on quiz).  Readings on WTO disputes.
Thur. 1/5 -- Quiz on trade factors and history (open note).  Complete the worksheet on Economic Development.  
Fri. 1/6 -- Read pages 5601-507. On page 507 do questions 2-6.

Wed. 11/30-- In class complete the partner project on SE Asia.  If absent do the following: Read pages 705-709.  Define mandala.  Write five facts about history (include both colonialism and independnece)  Write five facts (sentences) about the economy. Write five sentences about culture.  Look on the internet and find 2 places in the region that you would like to visit.  List and describe these two places to visit. Turn in these notes.

Fri. 12/2 -- Small group projects on Vikings.  Students will work in six groups on one aspect of Viking culture and present this information to the class.  Absent students will be assigned a topic and will write a 15 sentence summary.

Economics
Mon. 11/21 -- Research into the spending of various government departments.  Teams of students will be assigned a department and learn their budget.  They will then research to find out where that money goes.  This is preparation of our Mini-Congress simulation on Tuesday.
Tue. 11/22 -- Mini-Congress Simulation.  You can get partial credit for your research, but being absent for the simulation means you will miss the discussion points.  If this is unavoidable, you can see me about extra credit.

Thur. 11/17 -- Start Japan.  Timeline of Japanese history -- yes there are Samurai!  Each student will complete one section of the timeline. If you are absent, you still have to complete a secton of the timeline.  Get directions from me.
Fri. 11/18 -- Global Issues Paper due. Japanese culture, Modern Japan web, take notes on p. 651-655. Video: Living Treasurers of Japan.

Mon. 11/14 -- Lecture on Investing.  Students will make a model investment portfolio based on the risk level found on their on-line quiz.  Portfolio pie graphs will be done in class.  We will also learn how to read an stock market report. -- Worksheet done together in class.
Tues. 11/15 -- Computer Lab -- Stock Market Research.  If you are absent you need a copy of these directions.
Wed. 11/16 -- Stock Profile.  Research into one stock from your group.  Each student will write a short profile of a current US stock evaluating its strength as an investment.  Again you need the directions (although there is a quick version on the Stock Market Research directions from Tue.)

Fri. 11/18 -- Test on Labor, Banking and Finance.  Chapters 10 and 14.

Mon. 11/14 -- Group project on Byzantine legacies.  Each group will report back to the entire class on their topic.  Project and presentation points.  If you are absent:  Write a 200 word paper on one of these topics:  Justinian's Law Code,  Byzantine architecture (Hagia Sophia), or Eastern Orthodox Christian Church.

Mon. 10/24 -- Reading from National Geographic and worksheet on health and economic issues in Africa.  You can pick up the worksheet and a copy of the reading from the blue folders.
Tue. 10/25 -- Review day one for the test.  Students will complete the review sheet for the test.
Wed. 10/26 -- Review day two for the test.  We will discuss and take notes on possible ideas for the test essay (where students will discuss three problems in Africa). We will also play a review game.
Thur. 10/27 -- TEST over Africa.  There is a three-paragraph essay.  The test is the last grade on the first quarter.  I will collect reveiw sheets.

Economics
Mon. 10/24 -- Finished the pies on state and local spending.  We spent most of class reviewing current events having to do with taxes.  Absent students will have to choose an article and write a 10 sentence summary with analysis.
Tue. 10/25  Federal Debt. Reading page 227-283.  Quick discussion over topics.  Students will read the chapter and take an open book test over the reading.  No talking at all.
Wed. 10/26 -- Review for the test over chapters 8-10.  The essay will focus on federal government taxes and spending.

World Geography
Mon. 10/17  turn in political map of Africa.  Notes on the history of Africa.  If absent, get a note sheet and copy the notes from a classmate.  Turn in the notes for credit.
Tues. 10/18 -- Fast Facts about Africa -- Half-sheet of paper activity.  (No make-up).  We spent most of the day reviewing countries for the quiz on Wednesday.  Students created neumonic devices (memory) to help with the many names of African countries. 
Wed. 10/19 -- Quiz the Africa map. (Quiz is only over countries and physical features, cities are extra credit)  Parade of flags of AFrica.  If absent collect a Parade of Flags assignment and a country to study.  I recommend you check out an almanac from my room, but you may try to do the assignment on-line.  www.cia.gov has a World Fact Book that is helpful.  Also the Background Notes at the US State Department are good.
Thur. 10/20  - No class modified schedule
Fri. 10/21 -- Environmental Issues -- Viewing a series of video segments on environmental issues in Africa, from the drying of Lake Chad to Biodiversity in Madagascar.  Notes are due.  If you are absent you must copy notes and turn them in.

Mon. 10/17 -- Lecture on the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.  Lecture notes from a worksheet -- get a blank sheet and copy the notes from a class mate.  Also the Julio Claudian family tree.  A quick talk on the interworkings of this first imperial family and the first five emperors.  There are also notes on this sheet.  Notes will be used for a quiz on Thur. Fri.
Tue. 10/18 -- Library day for Roman Travel project.  Get a copy of the assignment.
Wed. 10/19 -- A&E Biography on Julius Caesar.  We will use the DVD to create a timeline of Julius Caesar's life.  12 events with dates.

Geography
Mon. 9/26 -- Map of Southwest Asia (the Middle East). We also went over the test taken on Friday.
Maps are due at the beginning of the period on Tuesday.
Tue. 9/27 -- Correct map of the Middle East. Students are grading their own map.  The process is mostly to review the map locations and show them how I grade maps.  We read pages 487-490 outloud (again map review and discussed the Dead Sea). Students read 491-493 and completed questions 3 and 4 on page 493.
Wed. 9/28 -- Regions of the Middle East (will review countries again!). Label countries and write facts about the three regions of the Middle East.  See Ms. Fenton for a full set of directions.
Thur. 9/29 -- Finish the regions pamphlet on the Middle East.
Fri. 9/30 -- QUIZ over the Middle East map.  Correction: We did not watch the video -- it was missing.  We instead took notes on oil and politics in the Mid-East.  There is a note sheet with questions to complete.

Tue. 9/27 -- Comparision of Athens and Sparta, read Lycurgus and discuss Spartan lifestyle.  Introduce the Persian wars.
Wed. 9/28 -- Video notes (Greek advantages in the war) "Battle of the 300." 
Thur. 9/29 -- Power point notes "Golden Age of Greece."  REading p. 134-139.  Write down the name of 10 famous Golden Age greeks and why they are famous.
Fri. 9/30  -- In class handout on the Parthenon (if you are absent, you do one on your own!).  Video from Engineering and Empire on the Parthenon. Diagram and notes.

September 19-23

Geography
Monday 9/19 -- Turned in maps of the physical environment of Russia and the Republics.  As a class we worked through the Russia and environment worksheet and 1-12 of the review slides.
Tuesday 9/20 -- Finished 13-20 on slides.  Turned in Russia and the Environment assignment.  Did history of Russia worksheet.  Watched the end of the video from last Thursday.
Wednesday 9/21 -- Review for test, test review sheet handed out to students.  REMEMBER to study for the test.  There is no class on Thursday.
Friday 9/23 -- Unit TEST on Europe and Russia and the Republics. (Test moved from Wednesday to Friday)

Economics
Monday 9/19 -- Finished the demand project.  Student partners completed the economics mystery assignment based on brand-name products.  See Ms. Fenton for project make-up.
Tuesday 9/20 -- Notes on elastic and inelastic demand.  What are the determinants of demand elasticity?  p. 112-113, main ideas 17-20, 22,24  and Critical Thinking, 25
Wednesday 9/21 -- Correct p. 112-113 (yesterday).  Notes on Chapter 5.  Make up read p. 117-123, p. 125 questions 2, 3, 7.
Thursday (2nd) Friday (6th) -- Complete the reading guide worksheet for Chapter 6 (skit #8).  This assignment may be used on the open note quiz on Monday the 26th.  Completed skits on various price factors to review the assignment.  There is not make-up for the skit.

Monday 9/19 --  Map of Greece and Timeline.  Looked at a powerpoint slide presentation on images from Greece related to the mapping assignment.  Map and Timeline due.
Tuesday 9/20  --Notes on the Minoan culture, Copy from a classmate. 
Wednesday 9/21 -- What is the difference between inference and conjecture? Discussion.  Complete the directions on the top of the Minoan Civilization notes.  Watch a video "Minotaur Island"  list 10 new pieces of information on the Minoans.
Thursday 9/22 -- Correct homework on the Mycenaeans (p. 123-126) Take the map Quiz on Greece.  Student groups completed a map of Mycenae diagraming the city and taking notes on the major features (Grave Circle A, Lion Gate, Treasury of Atreus and Megaron.  Look up the five underlined terms (on-line) and take four bullet notes on each to make up the assignment.

Monday 9/12 -- Read pages 282-285-- Human Environment Interaction.  The rest of class was a review for the Europe Map Quiz on Tuesday.  Study for your quiz!
Tue, 9/13 -- Map Quiz of Europe. Read pages 319-321 Q. 3 (all parts). Read pages 323-325 q. 3 (all parts) and 4.
Wed. 9/14 -- Russia Regions project
Thur. 9/15 -- Finish regions projgect (20 minutes) watch Pilot Guide video of Russia. (we got to Star City and will see more next week).
Friday 9/16 -- Physical map of Russia.

Economics
Mon 9/12 -- Turn in reports on Countries (from Friday). Examine the Economic Goals. Read page 43-45.  p. 45 Q. 2  List all 7 goals and explain what they mean.
Tues 9/13 -- American Free Enterprise System -- Read pages 48-53. p. 53 --  2,3,4,6,7
Wed. 9/14 -- Review for the test,  Complete the review sheet and possibly paly some review jeopardy.
Thur. 9/15 -- Test over Economic Concepts.
Friday 9/16 -- Begin Demand (Chapter 4).  Student teams choose a product and create a series of question to see which factors most affect demand for their product.  Each student has interviews over the weekend.  If absent -- get the note sheet and then complete task 1-3 on the project.

Tuesday 9/6 -- Political Map of Europe.  You will need your book.  Map due on 9/7.
Wed. 9/7 -- Regions project for Europe.  This assignment is done in pairs.  See me for directions to make up this work.  It is best if you have a partner who will work with you!
Thur. 9/8 -- Finish the Regions project from Wed.  Read 282-285 Human Environment interaction.  Video on Enchanted Cities of Europe -- you need to get a note sheet and copy the notes from a classmate.
Fri 9/9 -- (35 minutes)  Map of physical features of Europe.

Economics
Tue. 9/6 -- Simulation for bartering (no make-up, but you miss out!).  Review for the vocabulary quiz on Wednesday. Economics Systems Chart (get from me)
Wed. 9/7 -- Chapter 1 Vocabulary Quiz. Noted on Mixed Economies.  Get a sheet and fill in the blanks in the PP. Know Adam Smith and Karl Marx!

Geography
Tuesday 8/30 -- Introduction, policies, intro quiz.  If absent collect the policies and syllabus.  Take them home to be signed by parent/guardian. 
Wed. 8/31 -- Map Review for the Quiz on continents and oceans. Cartography work with lattitude and longitude, finding things on the globe.  Get a copy of the plate tectonics map (p. 37 in text for map)
Thursday 9/1 -- What are the five themes of geography. If absent read p. 5-9 and describe the five themes of geography.
Friday 9/2 -- Quiz on the continents/oceans.  Complete work on five themes.  Discussion of plate tectonics and mountain buildings.

Economics
Tuesday 8/30 -- Policies and Syllabus.  There is a half sheet of paper to return.  Begin work on the goods and services economic study. Interviews are due on Wednesday.
Wednesday 8/31 -- Complete data collection and analysis on good and services project.  Student groups will work together to analyze data, report conculsions and make predictions.  If absent: Turn in interview data with simple analysis and reference to the hypothesis.
Thursday 9/1 -- Chapter 1 Vocabulary.  (Books were checked out)
Friday 9/2 -- Finished presentations on Chapter 1 vocabulary.  Vocabualry review puzzles were handed out.  They are due on Wednesday 9/7 (Day of vocab QUIZ).
