Jan 3-5, 2018

Wow a new year has arrived and we are down to 2.5 weeks in the semester.  Here we go...

AP Human Geography
Wed. 1/3 -- Review ethnic distributions in the United States.  U.S. census activity with data for four cities and states and a color coded map. DUE: CRQ on Population -- remember it must be typed and printed for full credit.  
Thur. 1/4 -- Lecture notes on ethnic migrations in the U.S. and a few other countries for examples.  We will look at the history of segregation in the U.S. and South Africa.
Fri. 1/5 -- Introduction to ethnic conflict.  We will be assigned teams to work on a research project on ethnic conflict.  Each team will have a different topic and will create a slide show to present to the class.  Slide shoes due on Wednesday 1/10.

Economics
Wed. 1/3 -- Most of the class will go to the ASVAB interpretation class conducted by Dr. Cook in the career center to complete their high school and beyond plan.  The seniors will watch a DVD on U.S. and China trade.
Thur. 1/4 -- Hand out new purple calendars. "Can trade be win-win" lecture with notes.  We will also watch crash course economics #2 to complete the work on trade absolute and comparative advantage. There are questions with the video on the lecture note sheet.
Fri. 1/5 -- T-chart with graphic elements on protectionist and free trade arguments.

December 11-19, 2017

This post is for one week and the first two days of the following week. 

AP Human Geography
Mon. 12/11 -- Chapter 6, Key Issue 4 -- Religious conflict -- religion vs government (Taliban and Hinduism) and religion vs communism (USSR and China).  Introduce Key issue with some notes on the first three pages.  Break into groups and research the answers to questions about Ireland, Israel/Palestine and the Islamic State.  How do religious differences play into these conflicts.  We finished Ireland on Monday.
Tue. 12/12 -- Finished Israel/Palestine and the Islamic State.  The notes have some embedded video.  I would suggest watching Clarissa Ward of CBS news explain the Suni vs Shia conflict (you can google it on Youtube). Notes and discussion.
Wed. 12/13 -- Quiz on Chapter 6 -- Religion.  Time to work on calendar/holy day presentations.  Notebook #5 DUE. 
Thur. 12/14 -- Holy days presentations
Fri. 12/15 -- Finish Holy days presentations
Mon. 12/18 -- Go over the chapter 6 quiz and review religious geography of the U.S..  CRQ on religious distribution -- in class write.
Tue. 12/19 -- Grade the CRQ and discuss the best ways to score well on the writing portion of the AP test.  Winter Break assignment -- writing on Population.  DUE Wed. 1/3/18

Economics
Mon. 12/11 -- Review Fiscal Policy from Friday and grade the front side of the "Fiscal Policy" worksheet.  Notes on Supply-side policy.  Work stamped in class.
Tue. 12/12 -- Introduce the Federal Reserve -- Look at money and identify the local Federal REserve district (#12).  Maintaining the quality and circulation of the money supply is one of the main responsibilities of the Fed.  We also looked at security features on the paper currency.  Students completed a graphic organizer on the structure of the Fed and its responsibilities.
Wed. 12/13 -- Notes on Monetary Policy and the tools of MP.  I handed out a graphic organizer that students filled in showing reactions with recessions and inflation.  Finished the class playing the Fed Chairman game from the San Francisco Federal Reserve.  It is worth 10 extra credit points if you get reappointed chair!
Thur. 12/14 -- Small group activity to review the difference between Fiscal and Monetary Policy.  Hand out reviews for the exam on Monday.  [This is a lot of information in these chapters so you will need to study for the exam. Notebook #5 DUE
Fri. 12/15 -- Review for the exam
Mon. 12/18 -- Government and the Economy exam (chapters 14-16).
Tue. 12/19 -- Fun surprise activity where you will probably win prizes.

AP Human Geography
Mon. 12/4 -- Correct worksheet on the distribution of religions.  Break into groups of three and make a graphic organizer about the largest universalizing religion.  The graphic organizer directions are posted on the google classroom space.
Tue. 12/5 -- Review the hearths of religions with a picture power point.  Maps showing the diffusion of religions from their hearths and agents of diffusion.
Wed. 12/6 -- Qz. Chapter 6, Key issues 1-2 (religious distribution and diffusion). Break into groups of six. We will tackle Key Issue 3 on religious organization.  Each group member will take one religion and complete the section of the chart for that religion.  They will then share the information with others.  We will make a large class diagram.
Thur. 12/7 -- Continue the assignment from Wednesday
Fri. 12/8 -- Holiday presentation. Assignment posted to Google classroom.

Economics

Mon. 12/4 -- Introduction to the budget and budget numbers.  How do competing tax bills make their way through conference committees.  Budget showdown this week!  Begin assignment to research discretionary spending by department. 
Tue. 12/5 -- Continue spending research
Wed. 12/6 -- Mini-Congress.  We will use our research to try and cut 50 billion from discretionary spending.  Simulation.
Thur. 12/7 -- Budget Debt. Pages 417-422.  You will read the section and take notes.  You can ask me questions.  When you are ready, you can use the notes you have taken on the quiz.  It is about 14 multiple choice questions.
Friday. 12/8 -- Fiscal Policy, Keynes and Stimulus .  Crash Course video #8, questions and some follow-up reading in the book, p. 438-443.

Mon. 11/27 -- Taxation basics -- vocabulary cartoons for chapter 14, lesson 1.  If you are absent you need to complete the vocabulary sheet.  Do it quickly because there is a vocab quiz on Wednesday. Presentations of vocabulary and cartoons.
Tue. 11/28 -- Finish vocabulary presentations.  Lecture on Federal, state and local taxes.  Students will complete a chart about different types of taxes. 
Wed. 11/29 -- Qz. Vocabulary from 14.1.  Read pages 406-410 and describe a Flat Tax and a VAT Tax (2 sentences each) with a pro/con at the bottom.  Make a timeline with summaries of the different attempts at tax reform.  One sentence each with a date.
Thur. 11/30 -- Federal budgets and taxes -- We will look at current tax reform but analyzing an article by Paul Krugman who writes for the New York Times.  This article is from 10/14 and discusses proposed tax reform.  
Fri. 12/1 -- Federal Budget numbers and notes on "IOU USA" a documentary on federal spending and debt.

AP Human Geography
Mon. 11/20 -- Review for the Culture 1 Test (Culture and Language).  The test will also have some review from chapter 1 -- possibilism, region vocab.  From chapter 2 the DTM and from chapter 3 migration vocab and push and pull factors (with a map).  All of the review makes up about 10 questions on a 56 question test, so focus your efforts on chapter 4-5. 
DUE: CRQ essay on Lingua Franca
Tue. 11/21 -- Culture 1 Test -- Chapters 4-5 -- There are 56 multiple choice questions and no essay. If you are leaving early for vacation, turn in your notebook :)
Wed. 11/22 -  Collect Notebook #4.  Go over the CRQ essay with a scoring rubric.
Half Day of School -- You are out at 10:55.

Economics
Mon. 11/20 -- Day 2 on the HSBP or the Corporation Project.  We will also go over the test on macroeconomic performance.

Tue. 11/7 -- Video available on-line -- Enrico Moretti "The New Geography of Jobs."  Brain hubs and old industrial capital research with a partner.  We will look at the communities Moretti identifies in his video (produced by the San Francisco FED).  What are the characteristics of a "brain hub" and "old industrial capital" How is wealth distributed in the U.S.
Wed. 11/8 -- Reading on Business Cycles p. 366-371. Questions 1. Diagram the business cycle p. 367, 2. List 5 causes of the business cycle. 3. What caused the Great Recession of 2008-2009? 4. Identify two facts about the Great Depression, List four causes, and list four reforms made.
5. What is the LEI?  Watch video on-line "Crash Course Economics #12"  Go on Google and search it.  Find two reasons for the Fiscal Crisis and two steps taken by the government to help.

Mon. 10/30 -- I hope you remember to take a picture of your house or a house!  Quick review activity on the difference between folk and popular culture.  Housing reading p. 122-123 together.  Map of U.S. with hearth houses and spaces to write about other housing styles.  You need to learn the hearth house which are folk culture.
Tue. 10/31 -- Quiz Chapter 4, Key Issue 1-2 [ 8 vocabulary and 8 multiple choice] Notes on access and diffusion.
Wed. 11/1 -- Read p. 132-133 on folk cultures.  Why should we care that folk cultures are vanishing? Video on the Australian Aborigines.  There is a sheet of questions with the video.
Thur. 11/2 -- Graphic Organizer on sustainability.  Chapter 4 review game and I will hand out the review sheet.  HW: Study for the Asia quiz tomorrow.

Mon. 10/16 -- Reading assignment "New Europeans" due at the beginning of class.  Remember you need to mark it up and have at least two questions written in the margins.  We will discuss the article, read about refugees, focusing on refugee's from Syria and how Europe is dealing with huge immigrant populations.  Map of the Syrian refugee crisis.
Tue. 10/17 -- Mini-lecture and notes on borders.  Activity which involves reading and drawing about the characteristics of of the U.S. Mexico border.  HW: Finish assignment as needed. 
Wed. 10/18 -- Review day for chapters 2-3 [Population and Migration]  HW:  STUDY for the test!!
Thur. 10/19 -- Test: Unit 2: Population and Migration.

Mon. 10/16 -- PP on Bank History.  Partners will create a timeline on banking history.  If you are absent you will do the following.  Make a timeline with 8 crucial dates in the history of money and banks in the U.S.  For four of the 8 dates you must explain WHY those events are important.  You will need to write 2 sentences to explain. The class assignment is slightly different.
Tue. 10/17 -- Open note quiz on Money and Banking (Chapter 10, Lesson 1-2). Watch 60 minutes -- "Your Bank has Failed" about the FDIC. You will have some time to complete the timeline you started on Monday.
Wed. 10/18 -- Short PP notes on Modern Banking.  Begin Banking Brochure.  This assignment is posted on our google classroom.
Thru. 10/19 -- Complete the brochure.  End the period with a brief discussion of how technology has changed banking.  Interesting question.
Fri. 10/20 -- Bank Brochure due by 4 p.m. Read pages 302-303.  In class we will do a simulation on the flow of money. If you are absent you get to read pages 304-309 and complete the lesson 1 review questions 1-6.

Tue. 10/3 -- Population Paradox -- diseases, Sub-Saharan Africa.  p. 68-69, look at disease maps on-line for major epidemic diseases.  Directions in google classroom.
Wed. 10/4 -- How do you measure health in a populations? We will look at statistics, reading maps ad predicting life expectancy. Students will complete a health chart with statistics and questions.Vocab puzzle :) HW:  Chapter 2 quiz tomorrow, create an 5X8 note card to use of the quiz.  You can write notes, diagrams, etc. from chapter 2 to help with tomorrow's quiz.  Use only one side of the note card.

Mon. 10/2 -- Movie: Tucker: A Man and His Dreams.  The movie is based on a true story of Preston Tucker who started the Tucker Car Company in the 1940's. The movie looks at the rise and fall of the company, ending in a dramatic fraud trial.  Students will write a response to the movie.

Wed. 10/4 -- PP notes on market failures.  Newspaper activity on types of market failures.  Response to Tucker DUE.

AP Human Geography
Mon. 9/25 -- In class reading and questions on pages 50-55.  We will be reading about components of population growth -- CDR, CBR, NIR, mortality and fertility rates.  We finish with an introduction to population pyramids.  The questions will be projected on document camera.  HW: Gapminder activty www.gapminder.org  -- from top tool bar go to gapminder tools.
Tue. 9/26 -- DVD: population paradox -- India. What is happening to population growth in India.  Ten notes from the video.  Small group activity on population pyramids.  What can you learn about the population of a society based on the pyramid?  HW: Graph the CDR and CBR of Mexico and Sweden.  Each student will have a data table for each country and graph paper.  Make two graphs (one for each country) and graph a CDR and CBR line, separately -- use two colors and make a key showing which line is which. 
Wed. 9/27 -- Lecture on the Demographic Transition Model (notes).  Complete the questions on Sweden and Mexico's population dynamics.  What DTM stages do you see?  HW: Finish the questions if you did not finish during class time. 
Thur. 9/28 -- Reading and lecture combines on birthrates and Malthus.  p. 58-63.  Focus on Japan, China and India.  HW: TED talk "Global Population, Box by Box."  Just watch it.

Mon 4/17 -- Work on City Model flipbook.  There are specific directions written on the board.  If you are home sick, e-mail me and I can send a copy.  We have a REQUIRED system of color coding, so they will all be the same.  You will write a two sentence description of the model and find a "best fit" current city.
Tue. 4/18 -- Last day to work on the city-model flip book.  We will spend the last 10-15 minutes of class going through the models with a powerpoint and discussing each.  Please start turning in your flip books. 
Wed. 4/19 -- Shadow Cities TED talk.  What are squatter settlements?   Powerpoint notes on urban models in the developing world and the role of squatter settlements. If there is extra time we will watch a segment of Discovery Atlas that shows squatter settlements in India. All flip books DUE
Thur. 4/20 -- Quiz on city models (open note quiz). Begin partner project on expanding cities.  This project focuses on Key Issue 3 and looks at how cities are growing (urban growth boundaries) with satellite cities and public transportation.  2-Days.

Mon. 3/6 -- Go over the Agriculture test.  Begin the powerpoint on development statistics.  There is a handout with most of the definitions and some space to take notes during the lecture.
Tue. 3/7 -- Chart on development statistics.  This is similar to the earlier chart on health statistics but we will compare HDC with LDC numbers to look at the HDI.  Lots of practice.
Wed. 3/8 -- Reviewing statistics again, but adding in key issue 2 on gender statistics.  We will compare stats on gender and the GDI.  Happy International Women's Day!  HW: Review Key issues 1-2. Know that statistics.
Thur. 3/9 -- Quiz on development stats. Multiple choice with 14 questions.  Key issue 3 is on energy, so I have a great video on energy to watch today!  Notes.

Tue. 1/31 -- Mini lecture on the breakup of the Soviet Union.  Notes.  Activity on the map of the Caucasus Mountain region, p. 272-273, fix the borders activity.
Wed. 2/1 -- Activity on Colonial Empires.  Questions posted on the Google classroom page. Do one one section.
Thur. 2/2 -- Discuss: Delimited, demarcated, administered. Hand out vocabulary list and practice vocabulary puzzle.  Worksheet on the types of boundaries.
Fri. 2/3 -- Quiz over Political vocabulary -- 16 questions , matching.  Short lecture on types of government.  HW: Worksheet on Electoral Geography (DUE TUE. 2/7) optional extra credit.

This plan will cover some of the additional days due to the extension of the semester. I like to call it plan G 2.0.  This plan includes the additional "ice days" on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tue. 1/17 -- Correct worksheet on Ethnic Cleansing in the Balkans.  PP to review and correct Ethnic conflict reading notes from the past weekend.  Add notes as needed to your assignment.  List of topics and questions for the test on Thursday.
Wed. 1/18 -- Ice Day 
Thur. 1/19 -- Ice Day -- Review on your own for the Religion & Ethnicity Test.  Test Breakdown: Chapter 4 (Culture) - 9 questions, Chapter 5 (Language) -- 9 questions, Chapter 6 (Religion) -- 21 questions, Chapter 7 (Ethnicity) -- 21 questions.  No specific review questions from chapters 1-3.
 Friday 1/20-- Introduction to political geography.  HW: Worksheet on the Origins of States. Review for the Unit test.

Here are my new thoughts about a schedule.  Hopefully we are done with Snow Days.  I call this plan G (Go) because I don't like plan F.  Economics still has the most wiggle room. 

AP Human Geography

Thur. 1/12  Map and notes on ethnicities and nationalities in SW Asia.  p. 245-246.  Complete the map showing the major ethnic groups in Iraq and the chart on neighboring countries.
HW: Worksheet on nationalities.  STUDY tonight for the quiz on Chapter 7, key issue 1-2.  This is ethnic distribution and ethnic diffusion in the United States.  There are 15 questions, incluidng 8 vocab words and 7 multiple choice questions.  Know Plessey vs Ferguson and Brown vs the Board of Education.
Fri.  1/13 -- Quiz on Ethnicity, Key issue 1-2.  Worksheet on the Balkans.  Discussion of Kosovo and a reading from the news. HW: Reading about Ethnic Conflict.  Key Issue 3 p. 240-243 (Ethnic competition) and dividing ethnicities.  Reading p. 252-255. Ethnic cleansing in Sub-Saharan Africa.
