World Geography
Mon. 12/16 -- Review for the Asia test.  We will finish the review sheet and go over the three short answer questions. (Gandhi and non-violent disobedience; China and population; Cultural forces in Japan -- tradition and change).
Tue. 12/17 -- Test on Asia -- start the map of SE Asia
Wed. 12/18 - Finish map of SE Asia. Map is DUE today.  Introduction pages 674-687.
Thur. 12/19 -- PowerPoint on SE Asia (pictures and map review). SE Asia project with partners. Get directions from me if you are absent.

Economics
Mon 12/16 -- Reading about the "Budget Deal" going through Congress.  We will read an article about the recent House vote and then look at a CNN article on the deal in plain English.  Table groups will make a chart where sides compromised to reach a deal.
Tue. 12/17 -- Read the introduction to trade p. 441-443.  Lecture notes on International trade -- comparative advantage and absolute advantage.  If absent get notes and read pages 441-445.
Wed. 12/18 -- Brief introduction on trade barriers (tariffs and quotas). Students will make a T-chart showing arguments for protectionism and free trade.  There are five points of comparison: national defense, infant industries, balance of payments, keeping jobs and home and keeping the money at home p. 448-452. Fore each describe the protection argument and free trade argument.  Include a graphic. (you will probably want to see the sample before you start1)
Thur. 12/19 -- Trade history lecture and the WTO -- Mini-project on issues with the WTO. 
Fri. 12/20 -- Finish presentations on the WTO as necessary.  Federal Reserve Centennial.

World Geography
Mon. 12/9 -- Finish maps on East Asia.  Video on China from Discovery Atlas.  Questions go with the video, so if you are absent get a copy of the questions to copy like notes.
Tue. 12/10 -- Worksheet on China (p. 635-639). We will look at a population pyramid and see how China's population control policies are reshaping the country.  Also the policy just changed -- what is the new policy? Reading together about the Three Gorges Dam. p. 628-630. 
Wed. 12/11 -- Korea worksheet -- this is quite short and just compares North and South Korea.  We will watch "Inside North Korea" which is a really fascinating look at the country's isolation from the rest of the world.
Thur.  12/12 -- PowerPoint on East Asia (quiz review) QZ on the East Asia map.  Video "Living Treasurers of Japan
Fri. 12/13 --  Web notes on Japan (p. 651-655).  Make a web of notes about Japan -- History 5 bullets, Economy 5 bullets, Culture 4 bullets and life today  4 bullets.  Discuss Japan and tradition and change. Finish 5 minutes of Gandhi (from substitute) and hand out review sheet.

Dear parents --I will be gone from Wednesday 12/4 though the end of the week. 

World Geography
Mon. 12/2 -- Graphic organizer on religions of India (Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism).  Students will do a graphic organizer (complete with symbols)showing the basic beliefs of the religion, date and place it was founded, founder, name of religious building, holy book and symbol.  We did a similar assignment for the world religions founded in the Middle East.
Tue. 12/3 -- Lecture about issues in south Asia (population, monsoons and unstable governments).  Discussion of Indian history in preparation for movie "Gandhi" Students missing class will need to make up notes and turn them in.
Wed. 12/4 -- Movie "Gandhi"
Thur 12/5 -- Movie "Gandhi"  Students missing the video will need to look up non-violent methods used by Gandhi to gain India's independence.  Turn in notes describing the Salt March, Cloth Boycott, and Gandhi's fast during the division of India and Pakistan.
Fri. 12/6 -- Introduce East Asia, Map of East Asia due today.

Mon. 12/2 -- Notes on Christendom and lay investiture.  Students will translate letter written between Henry and Gregory into more modern language.
Tue. 12/3 -- Notes on the history of Japan -- these include a small map of Japan and continue through the rise of Odo Nobunaga.
Wed. 12/4 -- Library to work on a "Japan letter" Students need a copy of the directions but briefly they will pick a very specific topic about Japan, do some research and write a letter to me about what they learned and why they picked the topic. They need to use two sources and make an informal works cited page. Typically I get a huge range of letters -- noh theater and kabuki, to kimonos, to katana blades.  Sometimes students do specific battles.
Thur. 12/5 -- Video on Japan.  Write 12 facts about the life and rise to power or Ieyasu Tokugawa.
Fri. 12/6 -- Review sheet on European Middle Ages and Japan.
TEST on Monday -- if you are gone for Levenworth - get the review sheet - your test will still be on Monday.

Mon. 12/2 -- Computer lab to work on Corporation Project or Culminating Portfolio.
Tue. 12/3 -- Repeat Monday
Wed. 12/4 -- Library to do research on different countries and their standard of living.  Students will get a "Where would you like to live" assignment with a country already listed.  They will complete the research and analysis.
Thur. 12/5 -- Students will learn about the four different types of inflation and how inflation is measured.  Begin class with notes on inflation.  Students will make skits about various topics related to inflation.  Skits will be performed in class.
Economic Current Event #2 DUE -- about 75 word summary, 125 word analysis (use vocab words) and the citation.
Fri. 12/6 -- Read pages 353-359 -- Business Cycles an Fluctuations.  Draw a business cycle labeling the peak, trough, recession and expansion. Answer questions 2,3,4 and 5.

Tue. 11/26 -- Lecture on Castles and Knights. Reading about siege technology.  Quiz Review day.
Wed. 11/27 -- Qz. on Feudalism and knights.  Short PowerPoint and worksheet on Illuminated manuscripts.

Economics
Mon. 11/25 -- Finish GDP maps.  Introduce Keynes and the output-expenditure model.  Diagram of the components of GDP.  Video clip on Keynes.
Tue. 11/26 -- Library -- Internet quest on GDP and CPI (consumer price index). We might need to catch up a little on Keynes before we go.

Geography
Mon. 11/18 -- Directions for CBA (Classroom Based Assessment) Each student will write a short research paper on an example of Human Environment Interactions.  Students will have a list of topics to select from for the paper.  Directions and a rubric will be provided.  The paper is due Tuesday, 11/26/13
Tue. 11/19 -- Library Day for research and reading
Wed. 11/20 -- Library Day -- paper outline is due today at the end of the period.
Thur. 11/21 - Break from the paper, Map of South Asia (introduce Asia unit).  I will spend a little time today in class showing students how to use easybib.com a nice website to help create a bibliography for the paper. 
Fri. 11/22 -- Last day in the library. 

Ancient Medieval
Mon. 11/18 -- Return to Europe after the fall of Rome.  Map of Europe in 500. Read pages 353-357 to understand how Roman culture and Germanic culture blend in Europe.  Introduce the Frankish empire.
Tue. 11/19 -- DVD "The Dark Ages" about monasteries and general facts about the early Middle Ages (EMA) in Europe.  Students will color code a map of the monastery of St. Gall to learn about the varied functions monasteries played in the EMA.
Wed. 11/20 -- Lecture on Charlemagne.  DVD "The Dark Ages" to show Charles Martel, the Battle of Tours and Charlemagne.  Mostly notes today. 
Thur. 11/21 -- Qz: Germanic kingdoms (fill-in-the-blank).  Video on Vikings. Notes from the video on Vikings.  We will also draw a Viking longship!
Fri. 11/22 -- Group projects on Viking culture.  If absent choose one of the following topics to write a short (250 word) report about: Viking runes and rune stones, Vikings longships, Viking burial customs, Viking exploration.  In class small groups will be working on a topic of their choosing.

Economics
Mon. 11/18 -- We are in the computer lab to work on a stock profile for one particular stock.  Students started the project on Friday by selecting 5 stocks from the NYSE and doing some preliminary research.  Students today will choose one of these 5 stocks and really learn about the company, writing a short profile.

Thur. 11/21 -- Test on chapters 10 and 14 (banking, the Fed and investing)
Fri. 11/22 -- Introduce GDP, definitions and explanations.  Students will complete a GDP map of a continent.  If absent print an outline map of one continent (Europe for example).  Select 10 countries and look up their GDP, number of TV's per person, and male life expectancy.  Label the countries on the map and make a chart showing the data.  Color the countries according to the key.  +50K - 40K = Blue, 40k-30k = red, 30k-20k= yellow; 20k-10k = green; 10k-5k= purple and less than 5k is orange.

Geography
Mon. 11/4 -- Finish the video on Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.  Power point notes (with worksheet) on the history of Africa.
Tue. 11/5 -  Video segments on environmental issues in Africa.  Notes on the different segments will be due at the end of the period.  If absent copy a classmates notes and turn it in. Segments are on biodiversity in Madagascar, Lake Chad and poaching.
Wed. 11/6 -- Health and Economic Issues: Reading from National Geographic on Aids in Africa.  Reading on health pages 465-467 in class.  Section on economic development pages 461-464.  Readings in the book have a worksheet.
Thur. 11/7 -- Grade the worksheet.  Table groups will work on lists of problems in Africa.  Mr. Mars will come talk to the class the last 20 minutes of the period about his trip to Africa.

Thur. 10/31 -- Movie clip "It's a Wonderful Life" and a short review on banking.  Partners will create a timeline of banking history in the U.S. There will be 10 events on the timeline and 3 will have be be described for their significance.
Fri. 11-1 --  Watch "Your Bank has Failed."  What happens when banks fail?  How do they work.  Look at some local banks and services they offer.  See me for make-up.

Wed. 10/23 -- Test on SW Asia.  The test format will include multiple choice and matching questions.  Students will also answer and essay about 1 piece of culture (religion, writing, or art) and 1 source of conflict (oil, Israel/Palestine, or Afghanistan).
Thur. 10/24 -- Physical map of Africa.

Tue. 10/22 -- Mini-congress where the class will work to cut about $50 billion in Federal spending from discretionary items.  Students will be graded on their participation and quality of their discussion. Students will be paired for research and discussion.
Wed. 10/23 -- US Debt. Read page 277-283 and take notes.  You can use your own notes on the open note quiz.  Due before the end of the period.

World Geography
Mon. 10/14 -- Finish the Regions Pamphlet we started on Friday. There is a set of make-up directions to get if you are absent.  Basically we are doing a mini-map of SW Asia (p. 502) and writing sentences that are fact (4 sentences)  and opinion (1 sentence) about each region p. 503-519.
The second part of the period will be used to learn about Arabic writing.
Tue. 10/15 -- Power point and notes in a graphic organizer about oil and politics in the Middle East. Students will complete a worksheet using reading on pages 529-531.
Wed. 10/16 -- We will make a graphic organizer about the three religions which started in the SW Asia (Judaism, Christianity and Islam).  Each student will complete one graphic organizer including graphic icons for each subject -- again pick up a full set of directions if absent.
Thur. 10/17 -- QZ SW Asia Map.  Video on the Arab Gulf States -- Video questions.
Fri. 10/18 -- Reading on Israel and Palestine and this history of the region.  Palestine as a new nation and defining a stateless nations. Reading/worksheet p. 510-513.

Fri. 10/18 -- Introduction history of China power point. Notes stamp.  Small groups to discuss Chinese philosophies and how they compare/contrast in social settings.  Make a set of school rules that follow the different philosophies.

Mon. 10/14 -- Begin Chapter 9 with basic tax vocabulary.  Students will pair up and make a political cartoon about a vocabulary word.  Each pair will present the word and define it for the class. p. 229-236.
Tue. 10/15 -- Finish any words left.  Mini-lecture on taxes, types of taxes and a chart on the different types of taxes, including tax base and purpose.
Wed. 10/16 -- Quiz Tax Vocab. Read pages 246, 251-253. p. 256-257. Reviewing main ideas. 17-23, 27 and choose either 28 or 34.

Mon. 10/7 -- The Fall of the Roman Empire. Brief discussion and reading about the legacies of Rome.  Complete the graphic organizer. p. 173-176 is on the Fall of Rome.  Create a graphic Organizer with four boxes describing the fall of Rome.  Focus on major reasons and make sure to include the Germanic tribes.  Each box should have at least 2 sentences.   Middle level -- Rome Falls in 476 B.C.  Two bottom boxes will show legacies of Rome p. 178-183.  Choose two legacies and write at least 3 sentences analyzing why they are legacies.

September 30 to October 4, 2013

Geography
Mon. 9/30 -- Russian Regions project.  To introduce this section we do the three regions of Russian and the Republics.  Get a small map of Russia/regions and color the three regions.  Label the regions, not the countries.  (p. 360) Glue to larger paper and divide space into three sections.  For each section (p. 361-379) color code to match the map.  Find and list the following information: List the countries in the region. Provide one sentence on history, economy, culture and life.  Go to page 342-343 and add the populations of the individual countries to find the total population for the region.
Tue. 10/1 -- History of Russia worksheet, read about Chernobyl p. 368 and finish the video.

World Geography
Mon. 9/23 -- Look at a power point for Europe and discuss the regions of Europe.  Begina a project on the regions. Students will work with a partner to learn a little about the regions.  Each person will take two regions (p. 288 has a map).  For each region list 4-5 countries.  Then using the text (p. 289-315) write 2 sentences about the history, economy, culture and daily life in that region.  There will be 8 sentences per region, so each student will write 16 sentences.
Tue. 9/24 -- Finish regions project.  If we have time we will review cities and countries today.
Wed. 9/25 -- Read page 282-285 on Human-Environment Interaction.  If absent define: dike, polder, and seaworks. Do all parts of question #3.  The rest of the period we will complete the physical map of Europe.  DUE today.

Mon. 9/9  -- Latin America resources map.  Each student will be assigned a country in Latin America.  They will draw a map of the country, color is according to elevation and label 5 physical features, 3 cities (including the capital).  They will add symbols for the resources found in the country.  We will spend two days in the library.

Wednesday, 8/28 -- Class Policies and Syllabus will be given to students. Q and A over both.  We will do a pre-quiz on global features.
Thur. 8/29 -- Cartography is the topic today.  Review mapping terms and locate places using latitude and longitude.  Brief discussion of plate boundaries and a plate map will be completed. If absent define: longitude, latitude, key, map scale and equator.
Friday 8/30 -- QZ on the Continents and Oceans.  Books will be handed out and the Five Themes of Geography will be reviewed/taught with a group activity. If absent: read pages 5-9.  Describe each of the five themes of geography (for location do relative and absolute location) and provide an example not found in the section.

Tue. 5/28 -- Begin project on the 100 Year's War.  Student groups will research a battle of the 100YW and prepare a battle diagram with basic battle field tactics.  We will begin a presentation of the battle plans by incerting them into a lecture on the 100 YW in chronological order.  We will include changes in battle weaponry (cannon will emerge during the war as will the English longbow).
Wed. 5/29 -- Continue 100 YW and begin unit review if time allows  {Seniors in periods 1 and 3 will take their finalNotebook #6 DUE. -- exception seniors in 6th period.
Thur. 5/30 -- Review for the unit test.  [Seniors in 6th period will take the Final].  All senior notebooks due and books due.  Fines will be issued.

Mon. 5/20 -- Church reform and Crusades vocab quiz: Simony, Indulgences, St. Francis, Inquisition, Gothic, Flying Buttresses, Crusade, Holy Land, Richard the Lion-hearted, Saladin, Urban II, Siege of Acre. Notes on the evolving government of England and reading of the Magna Carta -- we will look for rights protected in the Magna Carta that are still current.
Tue. 5/21 -- Team project on the 12th Century Renaissance p. 387-392 in the book.  Groups will develop a visual for their project and write 50 facts about the Middle Ages from the text and supplemental readings in the classroom. 
Wed. 5/22 -- Finish the project and discuss changes in the Middle Ages
Thur. 5/23 -- Disasters of the 14th century :  Avignon papacy, Great Schism and the Black Death -- Notes and a video :)

Geography
Mon. 5/20 -- Introduce SE Asia and Oceania (look at the map in the book p. 674-687).  Complete the map of SE Asia.  Review if possible at the end of class.
Tue. 5/21 -- One day project on the history and culture of SE Asia.  We will also look at a few travel locations.  There will be a sub today, so if students are absent they will complete an alternate assignment from the text book -- see Ms. Fenton on Wednesday.
Wed. 5/22 -- PP on SE Asia and quick review -- QZ . on SE Asia.  Goodday May vocab activity and the map of Australia.  We should get done today, but may extend a little over onto the 23rd.

Art History
The class will spend the four days this week finishing their final project (which counts as a test grade).  The project is to design a museum exhibit with a theme and art chosen from the entire selection of course work.  The museum layout and art will be due on Thursday when students will present their work.

Tue. -- Library again (last day to work in the library, I will have tagboard to begin the museum layouts).
Wed. -- In class, finish the layout of the museum and double check all work.  Place thumbnail versions of art on the plan.

Welcome to HSPE testing week.  The school day schedule is altered significantly to accomodate three hours of testing time Tuesday through Thursday of this week.  Monday and Friday are regular schedule days.

Ancient Medieval
Mon. 3/11 -- Power point notes and introduction to India.  Worksheet on civilizations of the Indus River valley p. 44-49.  New calendars will be handed out today!
Tue. 3/12 (periods 1,3,5) -- Begin work on Hinduism and Buddhism posters.  There is an alternative assignment for students who will not be in class since this is a group project.
Wed. 3/13  (Last day for any late work on Rome!).  Repeat with periods (2,4,6).
Thur. 3/14 -- [classes are only 25 minutes long today].  Continue work on the poster.
Fri. 3/15 -- Quiz on Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity.  The quiz will have statements about the religions and students will have to correctly match.  There will be final class time to complete the poster ~ The poster is DUE today.

Mon. 3/4 -- Lecture on the Pax Romana,  Students will work on a graphic organizer on the Fall of Rome and the Legacies of the Roman World.  Essentially choose four causes for the fall of Rome and DESCRIBE them with two sentences.  Add two legacies of the Roman World -- mimimum of three sentences.  I do a table with four and two in class.  p. 173-183 for information.
Tue. 3/5 -- Finish the graphic organizer.  Watch and take notes form Story of Mankind section on the fall of Rome.  Discuss factors for the fall of Rome.
Wed. 3/6 -- Qz: Fill in the blank quiz about the fall of Rome. Group project comparing Rome and Greece.  We will discuss legacies from both civilizations.  Begin review for test.

Wed. 2/20 -- Readings on different aspects of Roman culture.  Packets will be provided in class.  You may borrow a packet or do reaseach on the following three topics: Roman legions, Roman gods/religion/  or Roman entertainment (baths, theater).  If you read a packet you must do an 8 sentence summary for each packet (two required). If you choose the research option -- write a brief report 200 words (your own words) on the topic you chose.
Thur. 2/21 -- Roman Republic activity.  If you are gone read pages 156-157 and describe the postions of consuls, senate and dictator.  Compare to the United States of America (see chart on p. 157).

Mon. 2/4 -- Review the map of Persia (today it is DUE). Watch Persia DVD with a brief set of notes (borrow and copy); Finish class with an introduction to the Persian Wars, causes, technology, etc. These will be some more notes which we will finish on Tuesday.
Tue. 2/5 -- DVD 300 Spartans.  Notes will focus on 10 reasons why the Greeks win these wars in spite of Persia's huge advantage in numbers.
Wed. 2/6 -- Power point on the Golden Age of Greece (an introduction); Reading from the text p. 134-139 Add to notes about Greek accomplishments in the Golden Age.
Thur. 2/7 -- Greek Architecture worksheet, watch a section of the DVD showing the construction of the Parthenon, discussion of Arete. We will do a worksheet and add notes to it.
Fri. 2/8 -- Greek Drama -- Introduction to Greek Drama.  Students will take a summary and the end of a Greek play (there are three choices).  We will use a piece of construction paper to draw a Greek drama mask and then write some quotes from the play. 
NOTE: Monday there is a quiz over the Golden Age of Greece.  It is True/False.

Tue. 1/29 -- A few minutes to finish up the maps,  Read p. 228-229 on the Caribbean.  Power point on the Caribbean -- Ms. Fenton's own slides from her trip! Also a few extra :)
Wed. 1/30 -- Map of South America.  Review the map standards and finding information from a map.  We will review both maps at the end of class.  This map and the Middle America map will be combined on the quiz, 2/6.
Thur. 1/31 -- Read pages 201-205, Landforms and Resources.  Review Latin America maps using the power point,  Notes will be taken form the power point showing the physical features divided into mountains, water, resources and forrests. Thur. 1/24 -- Cartography review and longitude and latitude.  We will also do a quick map of plate boundaries and use it for a discussion of mountains as we move through the course. Students will label plates and fault boundaries as convergent, divergent and transform.  Use page 37 in text if absent (or look on line for a tectonic plates map).
Fri. 1/25 -- QZ: on Continents and oceans. Work on the five themes of geography.  If absent read pages 5-9 and define the five themes.

Economics
Mon. 1/7 -- Discuss Fiscal Cliff legislation.  Introduce Globalization p. 501-507, Questions p. 507 Q 2-6.
Tue. 1/8-- Watch DVD "People's Republic of China" trade links between China and the US.Students will take notes showing the connections between China and the US in trade.  10 connections needed in notes, borrow and copy for grade
Wed. 1/9 -- Notes on Regional Trade Cooperatives (EU, NAFTA etc.) Hand out reading on the European Union Debt Crisis (hopefully some time for silent reading).
Thur. 1/10 -- Project on the European Debt Crisis.  We will do a jigsaw where students with different articles (see Wednesday) will write and share about the Debt crisis. Discussion at the end of the period.
Fri. 1/11 -- Global Resource Issues -- We will read articles from National Geographic about resource issues (from Tuna to fracking). Students will take notes and read today.  -- Assignment continues with presentations on Monday. 

Art History
Mon. 1/7 -- Review characteristics of the Renaissance.  Powerpoint and review of notebook.  Students will complete a map showing the Age of Exploration.  What new cultures will begin to affect art and government in Europe?
Tue. 1/8 -- Review sheet for the Renaissance. AC 91-100 are DUE :) the last set for the semester.
Wed. 1/9 -- Art review for the Renaissance.  We will look at the 25 slides for this unit and practice some unknowns.  Review vocabulary words.
Thur. 1/10 -- Renaissance art test
Fri. 1/11 -- Art of the Americans.  Powerpoint show and art project.  AP students will have an assignment attached to this period.  Notebook #6 DUE

Mon. 1/7 -- England :) Notes on the foundation of the parliment in England.  Primary Source reading from the Magna Carta -- What rights from the Magna Carta are still part of our world today?
Tue. 1/8 -- Social History Project -- Groups will complete a project on the social history of Europe in the 12th century.  Students will also read the section in the book and complete the worksheet. p. 387-392
Wed. 1/9 -- Second day on Social History project
Thur. 1/10 -- Disaster of the 14th century.  Short video on the Black Death. Notes will be taken using a graphic organizer for this lecture.
Fri. 1/11 -- This s a change from the calendar -- we are so lucky that I have an awesome new book on battles.  Students will work in small groups to briefly describe on of the major battles of the Hundred Year's War.  Groups will average 4 members and will show the tactics of the battle.  We will then take notes on the Hundred Year's War inserting battles as they come.  If you are gone get a copy of the notes and write a brief battle analysis of the Battle of Agincourt or the Seige of Orleans.
